About MindLight
Developing Non-Pharmacological and Non-Invasive Interventions for Mental Health Disorders
MindLight was founded by Dr. Frederic Schiffer in 2022, a psychiatrist, Harvard Medical School faculty affiliate, and research associate at McLean Hospital. His pioneering work on the theory and application of Dual-Brain Psychology and near-infrared photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy have shown great promise as interventions for a variety of mental health issues.

Fredric Schiffer, MD, has been studying the relationship between past traumas, cerebral laterality, and depression and anxiety, and has developed a hypothesis on the physical nature of conscious experience and its relation to the brain and to psychological function.
Dr. Schiffer also studies the role that near infrared light directed through the forehead to the brain may play as a treatment for psychological problems, including opioid use disorders. He maintains a private practice of adult psychiatry in Newton, Massachusetts.

Under the direction of Dr. Schiffer, MindLight has been awarded grants by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to evaluate PBM for the reduction of cravings in opioid users. Following the results of a Phase I clinical study to assess reduction of opioid cravings following PBM intervention, it received a Breakthrough Designation by the FDA. MindLight has also received significant SBIR funding to conduct a Phase 2 clinical study to evaluate PBM for the reduction of use in OUD. The Phase 2 clinical study is currently ongoing and being conducted at 2 sites in Massachusetts. More information about participating in this ongoing clinical study can be found at the Clinical Connection website.
